Do I need to be a member of the CIPD?

Yes, you do need to be a member to undertake a CIPD programme. You will be required to join as a student member at the same time as you register on the programme. In order to claim your qualification when you complete you are required to still be in membership. If you are completing an Award on any of the levels programme it is not necessary to become a member but you will be required to pay an administrative fee to the CIPD for processing your certificate at the beginning of the programme. Please note that subscription costs for CIPD membership are not included in our course costs.

What work-based evidence can I use for my portfolio?

Evidence can be any documentation that you have produced or contributed to, which can include policies, strategies, presentations, letters, emails, drafts, rough notes or minutes of meetings. Evidence should be no more than 3 years old. If you use evidence you will be required to contextualise their relevance to the learning outcomes and your involvement in them to demonstrate your understanding.

How long does it take to complete a CIPD qualification?

A CIPD guideline for completion of the Foundation programme is 7 months (Certificate), Intermediate (Certificate) is 13 months and Advanced (Diploma) is 2 years. Busec offers extended learning times for qualifications undertaken on the Distance Learning Programme as follows:

  • Foundation Award 2 months
  • Foundation Certificate 12 months
  • Foundation Diploma 18 months
  • Intermediate Award 4 months
  • Intermediate Certificate 18 months
  • Intermediate Diploma 24 months
  • Advanced Award (3 months per module)
  • Advanced Certificate 18 months
  • Advanced Diploma 30 months


Extending past the above timescales may result in an additional charge to continue supporting your study.

I have previous CIPD qualifications do I get exemption for these?

It is dependent on what you have and the level you are studying at, but the programmes do have exemptions for some elements of previous study. If you would like to know more please contact the CIPD directly at 020 8612 6200.

What do my fees cover?

Your fees cover full programme delivery a core text book, access to our digital learning platform, meetings or workshops (dependent on the delivery method), telephone and email support from your adviser, assessment and feedback. Additional costs are the CIPD membership, CIPD exam fees (Advanced only), and any other textbooks.

What are my payment options?

You can make a payment to Busec using cheque, BACS transfer or Credit/Debit card (via Paypal a fee will apply). As soon as we have received your payment you will receive access to the digital learning platform, details of your Introductory workshop (Distance Learning Programme) or details of your workshop schedule (Workshop Programme). How quickly can I start?

If you are undertaking the Distance Learning Programme you will start with an Introductory Workshop or Webinar the dates of these are available here. If you are undertaking the Workshop Programme you will start on the date of your first workshop.
