Wendy Strohm

What do you do for the business?

I am an Adviser Assessor for all levels of qualification. I have a background in HR and L&D and specialise in Coaching. I’ve been associated with Busec for many years – at least 15!

What is your favourite quote?

I find it hard to choose a favourite. Can I have two please?

Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. AA Milne, Winnie the Pooh.

“It’s impossible” said Pride. “It’s risky” said Experience. “It’s pointless” said Reason. “Give it a try” whispered the Heart. Author unknown

What is your favourite book or movie?

Again it is hard to choose one. My most treasured book belonged to my great-grandfather – Grampop – he gave me his copy of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carol. He also taught me many card games.

I have written two children’s books but I don’t think I can favourite those – but I feel quite proud about it though.

What is something people in your industry/niche have to deal with that you want to fix?

A lack of confidence in their ability to coach and a tendency to undervalue their work as a result.

What are your credentials/past experience?

I have an HND in Business and Finance, a B Ed in Business and Information Technology, an MA in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, and post-graduate Diploma in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring. I am a Chartered Fellow of CIPD and of CMI. I am a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management and of other educational and training bodies. I am a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and the International Coaching Federation.

I’ve worked in training, assessment and quality assurance for most of my career and have designed, implemented and monitored qualifications with LCCI, ILM, and CIPD. I have also been involved in steering the development of National Occupational Standards for both HR and for Coaching and Mentoring. I’ve worked for CIPD as a consultant for nearly 20 years and worked for ILM for 10 – mainly in quality assurance for qualifications and membership, as well as design, delivery and assessment. I have a number of coaching clients and an associateship with a coaching provider to London corporations.

What gives you the most satisfaction within your working life?

I really enjoy training delivery and assessment and helping individuals and organisations achieve through coaching.

If you were a cartoon character which would it be and why?

Jessica Rabbit – because she’s not bad – she’s just drawn that way. And because she loves her husband more than any woman’s ever loved a rabbit….

What are the values that drive you?

Kindness. Openness and transparency. Appreciation. Generosity. Humour – life should be enjoyed.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

I love to write and have had lots of poems published. I love to paint and I’ve sold quite a few pictures. I also love spending time with my family, doing crafts with my nieces and nephew. I enjoy yoga and pilates. I also volunteer as a committee member for the Guildford Coaches Group – currently Chair Elect – this is a membership group coming together for continuing professional development support.

I have been lucky to have travelled overseas – to Australia, New Zealand, West and East coast USA, Dubai and many European countries. In the last couple of years I have been to Norway, Spain, Venice, Prague and had an amazing holiday touring Japan. This year I went to Egypt fulfilling a childhood ambition to see the pyramids and the Sphinx. My picture shows how much I enjoyed it!
