What do you do for the business?
I have been an Associate with BUSEC for just about 10 years. I actually completed my Chartered Membership of the CIPD with BUSEC in 2008/9 through what was then the “Professional Assessment of Competence” route with Jill Nother as my adviser and assessor. It was a wonderful surprise when Jill invited me to become an associate. Over the years I have taken many candidates through the CIPD awards in HR Management and L&D at levels 3, 5 & 7. So, it is great to now be working with BUSEC in offering the training in leadership and management.
What is your favourite quote?
“Time is the only coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” Carl Sandberg, US biographer and poet (1878 – 1967) ……… wow!
What is your favourite book or movie?
As an undergraduate a read for a degree in Chemistry at the University of Exeter, so I now I enjoy reading history and philosophy, and in particular the Napoleonic Wars to the military history of the present day.
For a book, it has to be “The Passion of the Western Mind” by Richard Tarnas, which is all about understanding the ideas that have shaped our world! I know that’s a bit deep but in MBTI I am an ENFP!
For a film ….. “Top Gun!”
What is something people in your industry/niche have to deal with that you want to fix?
Improving the quality of leadership and management in the UK. People are doing their best but so often people are promoted and receive no formal training, which does them no favours and does at time impact negatively on relationships and in turn reduces engagement and productivity.
What are your credentials/past experience?
I was a Royal Navy Officer for some 28 years; initially as a helicopter pilot and then as a meteorologist and oceanographer before finally taking senior leadership appointments in the personnel area. I am a Chartered Fellow of both the CIPD and CMI. On leaving the Royal Navy I qualified as a mediator and I am accredited with the Bar Council in England and Wales. As a business coach I qualified with Meyler Campbell in London and I regularly undertake coaching supervision to maintain my professional practice, and I am an associate member of the Institute of Coaching at Harvard Medical School (USA).
What gives you the most satisfaction within your working life?
Working with people to enable them to achieve their career and professional desires – and to overcome the everyday challenges and difficulties that we all encounter from time to time.
If you were a cartoon character which would it be and why?
Tin Tin! He just gets it and is the complete hero! Closely followed by Asterix the Gaul.
What are the values that drive you?
Many but perhaps, trust, integrity, sincerity, resilience, reliability, understanding, independence in thought, commitment and passion spring to mind.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
My family are central to my life and my wife and I have two grown up children, a daughter who is teacher and an older son currently living and working in Australia, and a younger son studying for his A Levels. I do enjoy my golf and have played since a youngster. As a family we all enjoy sailing and watersports. Our garden is important to us and although I am no expert plants do keep coming back year on year and the grass continues to grow. I enjoy travel and would like to do more …… but it has to be in style!
