What do you do for the business?
I guess most people would see me as the leader of the business but I like to think that Busec is inclusive and collaborative and we do things as a team. However, I am the conduit through which everything flows and I rarely switch off (only when I am on holiday). I am involved in developing the strategy and manage Busec’s relationships and its finances. I also keep my knowledge and skills of HR and L&D current by working as an adviser for a large number of Busec students at all three levels.
What is your favourite quote?
Life must be understood backwards; but…………it must be lived forwards. Soren Kierkgaard
What is your favourite book or movie?
You are asking an ex-librarian! Can I have two? The Poldark series by Winston Graham (I first read these when I worked in Saltash library in Cornwall in the late 1970s and now I am reading them again). Here and There: Collected Travel Writing by A A Gill, so well observed.
What is something people in your industry/niche have to deal with that you want to fix?
Lack of management skills, meaning HR often has to help mend working relationships.
What are your credentials/past experience?
I have worked as an HR Manager and a Training Manager, mainly in the public sector. I gained my CIPD Post Graduate Diploma in 1994 and became a Chartered FCIPD in 1997. I have a level 5 coaching qualification. I started up Busec with a friend and ex-colleague in 2002. I am also an External Quality Adviser for the CIPD.
What gives you the most satisfaction within your working life?
Helping people to achieve their career goals and gain in confidence, both our students and my workmates.
If you were a cartoon character which would it be and why?
Bagheera, the panther in Jungle Book. Not only is he a cat but he is also responsible, wise, ironic and strong minded with a heart of gold. I hope that some of that is reflected in me.
What are the values that drive you?
Integrity, reliability, positivity, fairness, curiosity.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Reading, cooking, gardening, good walks, holidays where I can experience different environments and cultures. I love my weekly Zumba, Yoga and Pilates classes. I also do some volunteering for two charities when I can; The Rowans Hospice and Chichester Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre. I get to meet some lovely people through that.
