What do you do for the business?

I’m one of the Busec Assessors who works with candidates to assist them to complete their CIPD qualification.

Some candidates like lots of communication and interaction (often, but not always, Foundation Level students), others like to be left to their own devices until they have completed a unit or element of work (usually, but not exclusively, Advanced level students). What matters is that individuals study and compile their evidence the way that suits them best, and I’m there to help whenever they need it.

What is your favourite quote?

This one makes me smile: Nobody on their deathbed has ever said “I wish I had spent more time at the office” (Harold Kushner or maybe Senator Paul Tsongas).

Second favourite: “There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another which states that this has already happened”. (Douglas Adams, “The restaurant at the end of the universe”)

What is your favourite book or movie?

Books: So many, but top favourites are: Lord of the Rings (Tolkein); any book by Jane Austin; The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Tiger who Came to Tea and Blooming Father Christmas (for reading to small children).

What is something people in your industry/niche have to deal with that you want to fix?

Finding time in their busy lives to cope with work demands, home issues and their CIPD qualification. I empathise because, when I was studying for my MBA, I had a full time job and four small children to cope with. What I really needed was a magic wand (or a Tardis for time travel) but the mundane alternative was to prioritise and self-motivate – not easy.

What are your credentials/past experience?

My first job was in IT, programming then systems analysis and later sales and marketing. I moved into HR by accident when Invited to assist in interviewing candidates for graduate trainee jobs (it included taking them out for lunch so I was quick to volunteer). Later I began delivering training to successful candidates. HR and L&D proved more interesting than IT and becoming a full-time HR practitioner was my next career choice. Working with a big consultancy organisation, I have travelled all over Europe and the Middle East designing and delivering L&D courses and conferences to organisations in every market sector and at all levels of seniority.

What gives you the most satisfaction within your working life?

I have been working with Busec since ?? and very much enjoy the interaction with students who are tackling their CIPD qualification. It’s a privilege to get to know them and to assist them to the best of my ability in attaining their certificates and diplomas. I’m proud to say that none of my assigned candidates who completed their portfolio of evidence has ever failed to meet the CIPD requirements.

If you were a cartoon character which would it be and why?

Spongebob Squarepants: I love his inquisitiveness, determination and humour.

What are the values that drive you?

Friendship; Integrity; Effective communication; Personal development + achievement of potential;

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Spending time with my friends and family (especially the grandchildren). Going on holiday. Reading. Going to the leisure centre for exercise classes (but not to the gym – too boring).
