CIPD Professional Assessment of Competence (PAC)

What is Professional Assessment?

Professional Assessment is a route to Chartered Membership of CIPD, specifically designed for HR and Learning and Development practitioners who have 5 years or more management experience.  Candidates meet the CIPD Professional Standards by building a portfolio that demonstrates their competence and knowledge.  We use a range of assessment methods; for example: discussion, questioning, work-based evidence and written narratives.  E-portfolio is an invaluable on-line assessment tool available for all our candidates.

"I would recommend Busec unreservedly. The whole experience has been a happy one and was made as easy as it could be by Busec'
Sally Dupain, H R Director, Hospiscare, Exeter (December 2008)

Chartered Membership is gained by successful completion of four fields :

  • Leadership & Management
  • People Management and Development
  • Four generalist / specialist electives - there are 16 to choose from
  • Applied Field, comprising a Management Research Report and maintenance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

For people who are part-qualified we can offer part programme.

Different Approaches

We offer two approaches to professional assessment.

With the Standard Programme you will write a narrative that demonstrates your knowledge of a specific area of HR, this is supported by a portfolio of evidence.  This approach is most suitable for people who are able to complete the programme over an eighteen month time-scale.  It also lends itself to practioners who have a reflective approach and would enjoy writing about their work.

With Executive Assessment, professional discussion replaces the need for a written narrative though you still need to provide evidence to demonstrate your practice.  This route enables practitioners to 'fast-track' their professional assessment.

How will it work?

A member of the Busec team will promptly respond to your initial enquiry and will explain the PAC process to you and answer any questions.  The next stage is to meet for a diagnostic interview; this does not incur any cost or commitment but is just part of the fact finding process and will enable our advisers to map your experience to the professional standards and give you personal advice about your best options.

When you are ready to go ahead you will complete a CIPD application form and Busec will register you onto the programme and arrange a start up meeting.  You will be allocated a personal adviser who will work through the programme with you and help you to prepare and present the evidence to support your claim of competence.

Assessment can be on-going or carried out at the end – the programme is very flexible and tailored to the needs of the candidate.

All of Busecs programmes are quality assured through internal and external verification.
